KINTSUBI 1 Mending broken pottery with gold and resin. Source 16th C Japan: “Snow on Mountain”.

Painting was inspired by a famous tea bowl accidentally broken but repaired by the potter with beads of gold on waterproof black resin. My image uses watercolour and luminescent watercolour with gold powder on rough hand made paper 200#. From the shattered fragments of a beautiful tea bowl an exquisite object is created.

An intensive riff on pots of pansies with a few stems of tiny white flowers. Watercolour on 200# Arches cold press paper. 16 X 20” unframed $ 350 CDN

20 Trees and a Safak Rug

Autumn brings the everlasting colour parade of falling leaves which I adore. I gather them, dry them off and litter my studio with them. This painting is an imaginary marriage of my leaves with a Safak rug bag with colours of similar intensity. It glows.

Fruit Bat on Almond

En plein aire Still Life. The leaves In this drawing/painting are from a large Almond tree next to the balcony of our rented apartment in Zihuatenejo, in Mexico. The Mexicans said the bites and nibbles on the leaves were the work of Fruit Bats. The considerable size of some bites are intimidating. The bat will bite if cornered requiring tetenus shots at the hospital. Fortunately they feed at night so One never sees them. The painting is shown as the cycle of decay and are accurate in size and colouration. 90# Strathmore pH balanced cotton paper. 16” x 20” framed.

Headstones: #1 Greatgrandmother won’t give up her girdle,

The great trees of the North Shore were harvested in the early days of Vancouver, N Vancouver, and Deep Cove. This tree lived on Tsleil - Waututh land, immediately adjacent to North Vancouver at Cate’s Park/ Whey au Wichen Park ( faces the wind ). Tsleil - Waututh means “ People of the Inlet”. Looking at the size and productivity of it’s volunteer growths, it must have been one of first to be cut down. This is how the cities were built and why old buildings with huge column and square cut beams survive to this day. I chose this old grandmother for the vestiges of her early branches which remind me of my grandmother whom we buried in her corset. Fierce old ladies are not to be messed with!

Crab Traps on a wharf, Eshaness, Shetland UK

A brave drawing of a very complex subject! Crab fishing was/is a mainstay of life on the North West Atlantic coast of the Shetland Isles. This grimy wharf had the whole story of Crab fishing: the miles of rope, the wooden spools they came on, the traps in various stages of repair, netting for the traps to keep the crabs in and the gear and cloth decorated with the floats to mark the location at sea. It was very colourful but all I had was my box of Graphite pencils.

YARN

Raw silk yarn skeins on a checkered tablecloth at the workshop of 2 expert natural dye producers off a dusty road near Oaxaca, in Southern Mexico. I was doing a total immersion natural dye workshop for a week in Oaxaca with my associate fibre artist, Leilani King. Our teacher Elsa Sanchez took us to visit a number of weavers using natural dyes. The process is labour intensive but the colour-ways are always harmonious and colourfast. Tropical dyers have the advantage of hot climate plants and earths including pomegranate ( seen in the magenta silk skeins ), ochre and indigo, cactus bugs ( purple ) and dyer’s weed (yellow). 14”X 14” multi media: pigment wax crayons, conte, with iridescent watercolour highlights on Arches 140# medium cold press paper.

The Pink House, Montevideo

Old Sycamore trees dapple the face of this beautiful old Colonial House in the intense sunlight. Montevideo has many old houses like this in the old part of the city. Mostly derelict now, they reflect the prosperous times of the turn of the 20th Century in Uruguay. How could I resist? Watercolour, conte and dry pastel on 140 # Arches cold press paper.
