Lee Iskander is a painter who works primarily from life and in a realist or impressionistic realist style. Lee works mostly in oils and sometimes in gouache or charcoal. Lee has recently become a regular at Basic Inquiry, where they paint live models during long-pose sessions of 3-6 hours of painting time. They also enjoy painting en plein air around Vancouver, especially in their neighbourhood of Mount Pleasant. In their figurative work, Lee works to draw attention to an image's status as constructed, often by leaving some areas unfinished and including all the accoutrements of the life model - like a timer, water, props, and stage. In addition to their artistic practice, Lee works as a researcher and educator. Their academic work focuses on issues of gender and sexuality in schools.
