Dana Cromie is an artist experimenting with light, colour, and rhythm within geometric constraints. His current series, ‘Star Gardens,’ are a six-fold variation of his many years of woven views. 'Star Gardens' are a progression of meditations involving geometric addition and subtraction using pencil, compass, straightedge, eraser, ink and paint, and/or coloured paper. Dana is intrigued with performance, particularly musical composition, and how the process of narrative through time differs from the static expression of two-dimensional work. Dana has a deep interest in nature, and extensive practice in horticulture. Historically, the garden is the difference between the two. The earliest gardens (paradise translates as around=pairi, brick or wall=diz) were intended to protect one from nature. Currently, nature needs protecting from us. Dana’s art is an extension of his life interests. Dana has been influenced by all manner of artists, and these influences do change through the years. As a young artist, he was greatly attracted to the work of Emily Carr and Georgia O’Keefe, later Chuck Close, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Charles Sheeler, David Hockney, Dan Flavin, and more recently Sol LeWitt and Agnes Martin. Like most artists, he spends a lot of time in museums when he travels, exploring what art speaks to him and trying to understand why.
