The Displacement Formula

d = vot + (1/2)at2Artist moves into sub-standard production space, not a safe area

d = (5.0 m/s)(3.0 s) + (1/2)(2.0 m/s/s)(3.0 s)

more artists move into the area, it becomes cool, funky, great vibe, edgy

d = 15 + 9 developers see potential,  quietly, development creep happens

.d = 24 m artist evicted, moved on to other parts of the lower mainland further afield.

Our industrial lands are under enormous development pressure and in the last year the Eastside Culture Crawl Society (ECCS) has been notified of numerous artist production spaces facing doubling of rents and/or eviction. We are in a crisis situation and are looking at various ways to address this pressing issue.

The juried exhibit  Displacement seeks to address the issue of affordable artistic production space by bringing awareness to the artistic loss to our community. The exhibit will feature work by visual artists who have ever been evicted and/or are being evicted. Or, in the case of many artists, both!

The work submitted for this curated exhibit does notneed to be about evictions, displacement, or migration. The work can be about the central theme of displacement but we are also seeking to illustrate the artwork that our city is losing, and will continue to lose due to displacement of artists. The shifting demographics and nature of our neighbourhoods can also be addressed.

Overall, this exhibit will question why the contribution of arts and culture to a city’s urban landscape is not taken more seriously. With recent real estate trends and developments, our city is simply not doing enough to provide assistance or advocate for

preserving the spaces artists need to carry out their work.  We not only should be considering solutions such as  incentivizing building owners, property tax breaks, community amenity contributions, development levies, but also supporting the unique circumstances of these tenants and preserving the urban character they generate and creating an unique artistic creation zone.
