Kathryn Alma-Nihte, aka Kat-A-Tonix, is a 13th generation Canadian artist hailing from the Pacific Northwest Vancouver BC, working in ceramics and acrylic large scale painting. Her family arrived in Canada in 1757. She is currently working in ceramics, while also adept at painting and photography. Her current focus has been Influenced by a Folk Magic tradition. She hand builds her clay sculptures in an American Face Jug and Celtic Witch Bottle influence. Historically used in magical practice by burying in the four corners of buildings or burying in a grave to ward off evil, as well as using them to burn “wishing words” or casting spells, she hopes to evoke your personal magical protection by using each piece in your own way. Her artistry draws upon her unique cultural heritage that she coins as her “Frankenstein Culture”, a misplaced settler with a long standing heritage of intertwined family cultures, in which diverse traditions are pieced together to create something entirely new. Through the medium of hand-built ceramics, Kat creates ritual and transformative face jugs and vases, imbued with the power to ward off evil. With a provocative and playful approach, remaining flexible with the “mistakes” the medium affords, her creations showcase a naive art style, while also serving as decorative pieces that evoke a sense of enchantment. The five elements of Earth (clay) Fire (kiln) Air (drying time) Water (water) Spirit (hand building) are factored into her meditative working style while listening to techno trance.
