Chrissy Cheung is a Vancouver-based artist and curator. Her paintings and drawings compel the viewer to follow the lines and modes of connection through which she animates her works. Though abstract in form, her pieces employ figurative material in complex, nuanced, and detailed ways. Her works draw on imagery from the real, the imaginary, the subconscious, and more, and transform such material in powerfully allusive ways. Vitally, Cheung’s work represents and embodies motion, both her own movement in their rendering and, subsequently and enticingly, that of the engaged viewer’s eyes. In this way, she captures the essence of temporal, physical artistic forms of contemporary dance and music, which are significant sources of inspiration. She grew up in Toronto and became interested in art at the age of seven. She studied at Concordia University, Montreal, completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2000. In 2005, she fulfilled an artist residency at the Banff Centre. She has contributed to the Salon des Arts at the 2008 Osheaga Festival. Her solo exhibitions include Structured Abstractions at the 2 of 2 Gallery, Toronto, and Stairway, Stairway, Dessins contemporains at Maison de la Culture Plateau Mont-Royal, Montreal. Recently Chrissy has been featured in reviews in Creators Vancouver, the Richmond Sentinel, Edmonton Journal, and Scout Magazine. In previous years, she has been reviewed in Akimbo and Now Magazine, and was featured on CityTV, Calgary. Cheung completed the Freebird mural in Vancouver’s Chinatown (2019, now defunct) and, more recently, her work is featured at the Signature Richmond BC Mazda dealership and Gyro Mazda, East York in Toronto. These projects exemplify Chrissy’s increased focus on finding public-art contexts for her work. Her large-scale paintings have been rented by Beverly Hills Productions, Los Angeles, for background art in the Fox television show, BH90210. Chrissy works in pre-production as a scenic painter in the tv/film industry. Recent exhibitions include Interconnections in a New World exhibiting at Capulet Art Gallery in conjunction with the 2021 explorAsian Festival, Richmond, BC. She also exhibited at the Market Art and Design Fair in Bridgehampton, New York, and the Reveal Art Fair in Saratoga Springs, New York, through ModArt Gallery, Miami, in July 2019. Her work is part of the Ville de Montréal, as well as private collections in Canada, USA, Denmark, and China. Chrissy was the curator for the Painter8 Arts Society from 2017-2021. In this work, she combines her knowledge as an artist who has shown in more than 50 exhibitions internationally with a vision for new contexts where art can be effectively realized.
