About the artistRae Maté is a Vancouver-born painter and children's book illustrator, well-known for her expressive Crocodiles and Cats and for popular handmade Art Cards of animals, still life, flowers and people. For two decades she has been a visual art instructor at Vancouver Arts Umbrella, working & playing with 2-3 year olds and their parents. Rae was a participating artist in the very first two Culture Crawls in 1996 and ’97, but soon after she left her long-time 4th floor studio at 901 Main Street to relocate to a new studio in her back yard near Douglas Park. She also paints, shows and sells her art on Hornby Island BC . Now, almost 20 years later, Rae is thrilled to be back in the Crawl! Missing the company of fellow artists, she recently rejoined former 901 Main Street friends and studio-mates at Portside Studios. She is rediscovering oil painting after years of working mostly with acrylics, and also enjoying experimenting with abstraction and printmaking after taking a course in art of the monotype with Heather Aston. Her newest children's book is "Crocs at Work!" with Robert Heidbreder , published by Tradewind Books.
