About the artistStefany Hemming makes paintings charged with a vital energy. These new works are the result of a fluid process of maneuvering oil paint into large scale abstractions informed by the natural world. Inspired by urban weeds, mid-century gestural abstraction and ancient calligraphy, her lines twist and grow into intricate networks that interweave the generative and the entropic. Growth, time and repetition are consistent themes as she explores the space between painting and the natural world. Hemming sees her works as a way to reveal motive, intention and place. She writes “My work is an exploration of painting as an obsessive, ritualistic, instinctive practice. It promotes painting as documentation of the intangible: evidence of one’s humanity.” Hemming graduated from Emily Carr University in Vancouver and studied Design and Visual Arts at Concordia University in Montreal. She is represented by Tinney Contemporary in Nashville.
